ICS-International Chamber of Shipping - Safety and Regulation

Shipping is the safest and most environmentally benign form of commercial transport. Perhaps uniquely amongst industries involving physical risk, commitment to safety has long pervaded virtually all deep sea shipping operations. Shipping was amongst the very first industries to adopt widely implemented international safety standards.
Because of its inherently international nature, the safety of shipping is regulated by various United Nations agencies, in particular the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which has developed a comprehensive framework of global maritime safety regulations.

BIMCO

BIMCO is a shipping association providing a wide range of services to its global membership of stakeholders who have vested interests in the shipping industry, including shipowners, operators, managers, brokers and agents.

The association’s main objective is to facilitate the commercial operations of its membership by means of developing standard contracts and clauses, and providing quality information, advice, and education.

BIMCO promotes fair business practices, free trade and open access to markets and is a strong advocate for the harmonisation and standardisation of all shipping related activity.

Accredited as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) with all relevant United Nations agencies and other regulatory entities, BIMCO actively promotes the application of international agreed regulatory instruments.

ESPO-European Sea Ports Organisation

The European Sea Ports Organisation was founded in 1993. It represents the port authorities, port associations and port administrations of the seaports of the Member States of the European Union and Norway. ESPO has also observer members in several neighbouring countries to the EU.

EU Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA)

Quality shipping: EMSA inspects classification societies, assesses port state control systems, tracks problem ships, and safeguards the standards of on-board equipment
Safer Seas: EMSA monitors over 20,000 vessels across Europe and worldwide, inspects how seafarers are trained, and ensures marine accidents are properly investigated
Cleaner oceans: EMSA provides ships to help Europe better respond to major oil spills, satellite images to identify polluting vessels, and ensures ships comply with environmental rules

IMO - Maritime Safety

Shipping is perhaps the most international of all the world's great industries - and one of the most dangerous. It has always been recognized that the best way of improving safety at sea is by developing international regulations that are followed by all shipping nations.
IMO's first task when it came into being in 1959 was to adopt a new version of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the most important of all treaties dealing with maritime safety.
IMO has also developed and adopted international collision regulations and global standards for seafarers, as well as international conventions and codes relating to search and rescue, the facilitation of international maritime traffic, load lines, the carriage of dangerous goods and tonnage measurement.

International Association of Classification Societies Ltd

Dedicated to safe ships and clean seas, IACS makes a unique contribution to maritime safety and regulation through technical support, compliance verification and research and development. More than 90% of the world's cargo carrying tonnage is covered by the classification design, construction and through-life compliance Rules and standards set by the thirteen Member Societies of IACS

International Maritime Health Association (IMHA)

IMHA is the sole international association concerned exclusively with Maritime Health founded in 1997.
We are an association of professionals from a wide range of disciplines who are committed to improving the health of seafarers by developing better approaches to health protection, health promotion and health treatment both locally and internationally.

International Safety Management (ISM) Code

This website dedicated to enhancing knowledge, understanding and debate about the International Safety Management (ISM) Code - in the hope that ships can become safer and the seas become cleaner.

International Seafarers' Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN)

The International Seafarers Welfare and Assistance Network is the new organisation that promotes seafarers welfare worldwide and directly serves seafarers by providing a 24 hour helpline. ISWAN is the result of a merger between the International Committee on Seafarers' Welfare (ICSW) and the International Seafarers Assistance Network (ISAN). ISWAN is a membership organisation with the International Shipping Federation, The International Transport Workers Federation and the International Christian Maritime Association as the core members.
