The Port of San Diego has received an award recognising its commitment to exploring alternative fuels, cutting petroleum use and emissions.
Recognising the port’s work within the San Diego region, the Green Fleet Leadership Award was presented by the San Diego Regional Clean Cities Coalition, a programme sponsored by the US Department of Energy to advance economic, environmental and energy security by supporting local actions to cut petroleum use in transportation.
“We are delighted to be recognized as an environmental champion within the San Diego region by the Clean Cities Coalition,” said port chairman Robert Valderrama. “At the Port we take our role as protector of the San Diego Bay very seriously and work hard to find innovative ways to reduce our fleet’s environmental impact on the waterfront and the surrounding communities.”
Local leaders
The awards recognise local leaders in efficient vehicle fleets, alternative fuel deployments and emissions reductions. The port has incorporated alternative fuels into its own fleet including the use of compressed natural gas as well as renewable diesel.
It has also been working with the local community to explore opportunities to demonstrate zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles and cargo handling equipment.
In 2016, the San Diego Port Tenants Association was awarded a USD$6m grant from the California Energy Commission to prove new technologies such as all-electric lifts and drayage trucks can be operated successfully in a maritime environment. The vehicles and equipment will be arriving at the port in 2018.
Tackling GHG
Through the port’s shore power programme, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from cruise and refrigerated cargo ships have been reduced by roughly 2,300t annually.
Since the adoption of the Climate Action Plan in 2013, the port’s own fleet emissions have been reduced by 3%.
