Neptune Declaration is Shipping’s Urgent Call to End Crew Change Crisis
 
On behalf of the European shipping industry, ECSA fully supports the new global pledge to urge policymakers to end the deepening crew change crisis. In the Neptune Declaration on Seafarer Wellbeing and Crew Change launched today, the signatories comprise over 300 maritime industry and human rights leaders, who vow to deliver on the shared responsibility to resolve the global crew change crisis that has left hundreds of thousands of seafarers stranded at sea.

Biden Signs ‘Buy American’ Executive Order Prioritizing Support of the Jones Act
 
President Biden signed an executive order yesterday to "Buy American" to support manufacturers, businesses and workers.

With the order, the White House said President Biden is ensuring that when the federal government spends taxpayer dollars "they are spent on American made goods by American workers and with American-made component parts." The order fulfills President Biden’s "promise to make Buy American real and close loopholes that allow companies to offshore production and jobs while still qualifying for domestic preferences.

Supramax Rates in Indian Ocean at Record High as Vessel Shortage Tightens
 
The lack of ships opening for fresh employment around India’s coast saw the Supramax freight rate for a 50,000 mt (plus/minus 10%) iron ore cargo from Paradip to China assessed at $16.20/mt Jan. 26, the highest since S&P Global Platts launched the assessment in mid-2014.

Initially stating that its systems security hadn’t been compromised, a few days later, it had to declare that it was working on a plan to get access back to its systems. A few years ago, this kind of news would have been unheard of, however organisations publicly declaring that they have suffered a cyber breach is becoming almost an everyday occurrence.

US to Impose Tough Port State Control Measures on Cyber Risk Management
 
United States requires all ships, U.S. flagged ships and foreign flagged ships that call on ports in the U.S, to ensure cyber risk management is appropriately addressed in their safety management system by the company's first annual verification of the Document of compliance after January 1, 2021. Failure to this requirement may result in detention of ship in US port.

COVID Lockdown Sequel Threatens Shipping Demand
