Maritime NZ examines coastal navigation safety risks

From July 2014, Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) has undertaken a review of coastal navigation safety. This follows work on the Port and Harbour Marine Safety Code earlier this year. The review will consider how MNZ is managing risks and issues around the coast, focusing on New Zealand's territorial waters, up to 12 nautical miles from the coast.

There have been a number of relatively recent developments that indicate a review of coastal navigation risk would be both timely and worthwhile. Developments include an increased number of ship visits to New Zealand, an international trend toward larger ships, and technology changes in the field of navigational aids.

Over the next year (from 1 July), the review will develop a comprehensive view of factors contributing to risks in the coastal environment and assess what risk management processes are in place and whether these are sufficient to safeguard the environment and monitor navigation safety in these waters.
