Project focuses in on air quality monitoring
 
Air quality and in particularly emissions monitoring has taken centre stage at the latest discussions under the European co-funded project Poseidon Med II.

The first session of the discussion, organised by CERTH, focused on the quantification of shipping emissions using innovative technologies, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems (UAS).

In his presentation, Athanassios Yamas, principal advisor at ALTUS LSA, explained that his company was awarded the first contract worldwide for marine pollution detection and emissions monitoring using UAS by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).

“ALTUS aims to become the market leader in air quality monitoring services with missions due to start in April 2018.”

LNG debate

Another topic up for discussion by members of the maritime community and energy sector, EcoPorts and Hellenic Ornithological Society representatives, underlined the significance of LNG as marine fuel for Eastern Mediterranean region.

During the session the necessary steps towards its deployment were discussed, such as the development of supply chain, offering of incentives to the front runners and the completion of the regulatory framework.

Poseidon Med II project is co-funded by the European Union and involves three countries Greece, Italy and Cyprus, six European ports (Piraeus, Patras, Lemesos, Venice, Heraklion, Igoumenitsa) as well as the Revithoussa LNG terminal.

The project brings together top experts from the marine, energy and financial sectors working together to design an integrated LNG value chain and establish a well-functioning and sustainable LNG market.
