ICS-International Chamber of Shipping - Environmental Performance

Shipping is the least environmentally damaging form of commercial transport and, compared with land based industry, is a comparatively minor contributor to marine pollution from human activities.
There has been a substantial reduction in marine pollution over the last 15 years, especially with regard to the amount of oil spilled into the sea, despite a massive increase in world seaborne trade.

ESPO-European Sea Ports Organisation

The European Sea Ports Organisation was founded in 1993. It represents the port authorities, port associations and port administrations of the seaports of the Member States of the European Union and Norway. ESPO has also observer members in several neighbouring countries to the EU.

IMARE-Institute of Marine Engineers

IMarEST is The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology; the international professional body and learned society for all marine professionals. IMarEST is the first Institute to bring together marine engineers, scientists and technologists into one international multi-disciplinary professional body.

IMarEST is the largest marine organisation of its kind with a worldwide membership based in over 100 countries, it is a registered charity and provides grades of membership for everyone, from those seeking to become Chartered or gain other Professional Recognition, to those just starting out in their careers or studying in education.

IMO - Marine Environment

In the overall context of sustainable development, shipping is a very powerful and positive force, making a major contribution to global trade and prosperity in a way that has only a relatively small negative impact on the global environment.
Shipping – which transports 90 per cent of global trade – is, statistically, the least environmentally damaging mode of transport, when its productive value is taken into consideration. The vast quantity of grain required to make the world’s daily bread, for example, could not be transported any other way than by ship. Moreover, set against land-based industry, shipping is a comparatively minor contributor, overall, to marine pollution from human activities.
IMO’s original mandate was principally concerned with maritime safety. However, as the custodian of the 1954 OILPOL Convention, the Organization, soon after it began functioning in 1959, assumed responsibility for pollution issues and subsequently has, over many years, adopted a wide range of measures to prevent and control pollution caused by ships and to mitigate the effects of any damage that may occur as a result of maritime operations and accidents.

International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation

ITOPF is a not-for-profit organisation established on behalf of the world's shipowners to promote an effective response to marine spills of oil, chemicals and other hazardous substances.

Provide leadership to the Tanker Industry in serving the world with the safe, environmentally sound and efficient seaborne transportation of oil, gas and chemical products.

ISSA (International Shipsuppliers & Services Association)

OCEAN is the voice of the Ship Supply Industry on European Affairs.

The objective of OCEAN is to represent the interests of all European Ship Suppliers in European Union matters relating to the shipping industry.

Membership is open to national ship supply organisations within the European Union.

OCEAN is a committee of ISSA - the International Shipsuppliers & Services Association - which is the international association of national associations of ship suppliers.

Activities
OCEAN meets regularly to discuss matters of common concern affecting the ship supply industry in Europe.

OCEAN has Working Groups for Customs and Veterinary Affairs and works hard to assist legislators in formulating workable laws and regulations on the one hand and explain these often complicated matters to members on the other hand.

OCEAN is taking a full and active part in the development of the Modernised Customs Code and other vital legislation. It is a member of a number of working groups within the EU.

North American Marine Environment Protection Association

NAMEPA operates as a voluntary, non-profit and non-governmental organization committed to preserving the marine environment through educating seafarers, port communities and children about the need, and strategies, for protecting this important global resource. NAMEPA follows in the spirit of HELMEPA's Declaration of Voluntary Commitment of 1982 "To Save the Seas."

World Ocean Council - Corporate Ocean Responsibility

The World Ocean Council is an unprecedented international, cross-sectoral industry leadership alliance on "Corporate Ocean Responsibility".
The World Ocean Council (WOC) brings together the diverse ocean business community to collaborate on stewardship of the seas. This unique coalition is working to improve ocean science in support of safe and sustainable operations, educate the public and stakeholders about the role of responsible companies in addressing environmental concerns, more effectively engage in ocean policy and planning, and develop science-based solutions to cross-cutting environmental challenges that cannot be solved by one company or industry, such as: invasive species, ocean noise, marine mammal impacts, marine debris, the Arctic, and others.
